I love cushions! And now that I know how to sew them I can’t stop making them!
If you have never made an envelope cushion before, you have got to give it a go – even if it is just once (although, if you are anything like me you will become addicted in no time!) It’s so easy, no zips, no buttons, just straight simple sewing 🙂
All you need is:
- Matching thread
- Pillow insert
- Sewing machine (the cushion can be hand sewn if you don’t have a machine)
Lay the material out and cut a length that is two and a half cushions long, leaving a small amount for sewing the seam.
Sew the two ends to give a nice clean hem.
Sew hems with straight stitch
Then fold over (wrong side) and sew the two sides. The photo and image below show how to overlap the fabric to make the envelope.

Turn right side out and there you have it…..your new cushion cover! Now how easy was that!
Here is the finished cushion, looking all comfy to sit with! 🙂
Another way to make this cushion is by cutting three pieces. Now I hear you say, “why would I do that?” well if you would like a cushion with an image or patterned front and plain back, or if like me you don’t have enough material for a whole cushion in the same material. I did this when I made my Christmas cushions.
So for this you would cut three pieces of fabric and sew them together.
Christmas cushions I made using the three piece method:
Whichever design you choose to make I know you’ll be more than happy with the cushion. So go make cushions and enjoy! 🙂 I know I’ll be making more, some for gifts this Christmas!!
I would love to see your cushions, so please share them with me and leave me a comment.
